Fluorite is prized for its rich variety of colors (spanning the whole spectrum), earning it the reputation of “the most colorful mineral in the world.” Most specimens have a single color, but a significant percentage of fluorites have multiple colors and the colors are arranged in bands or zones that correspond to the shapes of fluorite’s crystals.

Fluorite is frequently fluorescent and, like its normal light colors, its fluorescent colors are extremely variable. Some also phosphoresce, or glow after the initial activating UV light is removed; the electrons in the mineral store the energy of the light and then re-emit the phosphorescent light on a delayed basis. “Glow-in-the-dark” toys make use of these chemicals.
