Sodalite is a scarce mineral whose light to dark pure blue color is well known in the semi-precious stone trade. It is a feldspathoid, a group of minerals whose chemistries are similar to feldspars but are silica-deficient. Quartz cannot occur in association with a feldspathoid – if quartz were present at the time of crystallization, it would interact with the feldspathoid and form a feldspar. Sodalite is the only feldspathoid containing chlorine.
