Hence the Sivalinga is regarded as a "symbol of the great God of the universe who is all-auspiciousness." Siva also means one in whom the whole creation sleeps after dissolution. Linga also means the same thing—a place where created objects get dissolved during the disintegration of the created universe. Since, according to Hinduism, it is the same god that creates, sustains and withdraws the universe, the Sivalinga, represents symbolically God Himself. The Sanskrit term लिङ्गं liṅgaṃ, transliterated as linga has many meanings, generally as a mark, sign or characteristic. It has a number of specific uses in Sanskrit that are derived from this general meaning. Villagers gather the rough stones from shallow river beds and hand polish them to the classic elliptical proportions. Among the key features of Shiva Lingams are the reddish spots and strips found on the otherwise gray or tan stones. Various meanings are ascribed to the placement and number of these reddish spots. It’s believed Shiva Lingams are a symbol of sexuality and potent male energy, a Shiva Lingam raises and controls kundalini energy, grounding it into the body. They can be used for sexual healing and to facilitate the union of opposites such as masculine and feminine, or the body and the soul. Shiva Lingams sever sexual connections after a relationship is over and removes etheric phallic hooks. A stone of insight, it assists in letting go of all that is outgrown. Particularly useful for emotional pain that arises from early childhood, especially sexual abuse, it reinstates trust in male energy. A Shiva Lingam reenergizes the base chakras and opens the way for a new relationship. The elongated-egg shape of the Shiva Lingam is actually regarded as symbolic of the phallus of the Hindu god Shiva. In temples it is often paired with a corresponding object symbolizing the female, or the yoni. Yet within its own form, the Shiva Lingam symbolizes both the male and female.
